Couples Therapy or Marriage Counseling in Westchester County? Here’s a Structured Alternative

You may not know what kind of help you need. You may simply know that you keep having the same conversations, trust has changed, or the connection between you no longer feels the way it once did.

I am Vanessa Cardenas, a Relationship Reset Expert and Betrayal Recovery Specialist, not a licensed therapist. I provide relationship coaching and betrayal recovery support, not psychotherapy or clinical mental health treatment. If licensed clinical care appears to be the more appropriate next step, I will say so directly.

You May Be Searching for Therapy Because That Is the Language You Know

They are both talking. Neither feels heard.

One explains what they meant. The other explains how it landed. Before long, they are arguing about the conversation instead of the thing that brought them there.

Many people find me while searching for couples therapy or marriage counseling. Sometimes therapy is exactly what they need.

Sometimes they are looking for help understanding what keeps happening between them, what would need to change, and whether the relationship can work differently.

Both therapy and relationship coaching can address communication, betrayal, trust, and disconnection. The distinction is not that one addresses relationships and the other does not. The distinction involves professional scope, the kind of support being provided, and what is appropriate for your circumstances.

The question is not which approach is better. It is which kind of support makes sense for you.
Understanding Your Options

Two Different Approaches. One Important Decision.

You may have already tried counseling. You may be looking for help for the first time. Either way, the question is what kind of support fits your relationship, your concerns, and the way you want to work.

What Matters Relationship Reset Coaching with Vanessa Couples Therapy / Marriage Counseling
Approach A structured but flexible coaching approach. We begin with what is happening in your relationship and adjust our conversations as new information, concerns, and decisions emerge. Clinical approaches vary by therapist. Some follow established treatment models or plans, while others adapt their work to the couple's changing needs.
Primary Focus Rebuilding trust, changing repeated communication patterns, addressing emotional and physical disconnection, and gaining clarity about whether and how the relationship can move forward. May address the same relationship concerns, alongside mental health assessment and treatment when clinically appropriate.
Structure and Flexibility There is direction to our work, but no predetermined script. We can spend more time where the conversation requires it rather than moving through a fixed sequence simply because it was planned. Structure depends on the therapist's approach, professional judgment, and practice policies. Some use structured treatment plans; others work more flexibly.
Time Together Foundation Sessions are 90 minutes, with additional time reserved afterward when an important conversation needs room to continue. Follow-up session lengths are determined by the service selected. Session lengths vary. Many practices offer approximately 45 to 60 minutes, and some provide extended couples sessions or intensives.
Communication We examine what was actually said, what each person understood, where assumptions entered, and how a conversation shifted from connection to defensiveness. The goal is to communicate more intentionally outside our sessions, not only during them. Therapists may also work extensively with communication patterns, conflict, emotional responses, and relationship dynamics, depending on their methods.
Decisions We look directly at what would need to change, whether both people are willing and capable, and what staying, separating, or rebuilding would actually require. Therapists may also support relationship decisions, including reconciliation, separation, and discernment about the future.
Insurance and Privacy Private pay. Our work does not require an insurance diagnosis, medical-necessity determination, or treatment reporting to an insurer. Client information is still handled according to applicable privacy and confidentiality obligations. May be private pay or insurance-based. When insurance is used, coverage may involve diagnosis, documentation, medical necessity, and information shared with the insurer. Requirements vary by plan and provider.
Professional Scope Relationship coaching and betrayal recovery support. I am not a licensed therapist and do not provide psychotherapy, mental health diagnosis, or clinical treatment. Licensed mental health professionals may provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment within their professional training and scope.
Working Together You work directly with me, Vanessa Cardenas. Sessions are available in person in Peekskill, Westchester County, and virtually. You work with the clinician or practice you choose. In-person and virtual availability varies.

The distinction is not that therapy is rigid and coaching is flexible. It is that my private-pay coaching practice is intentionally structured to allow time, flexibility, and direct attention to the relationship concerns you bring. Therapy may be appropriate when you want or need licensed clinical care. The two forms of support can also complement each other.

This is not about going back to the relationship you had.

It is about seeing clearly enough to decide what the relationship would have to become.

Where We Begin

We Work With What Is Actually Happening Between You

Not a generic version of your relationship. The moments where the two of you keep losing each other.

Communication

When conversations keep collapsing

We look at what was actually said, what was inferred, and the moment the conversation stopped being about understanding each other.

Trust

When trust has been damaged

We look at behavior, consistency, responsibility, and what happens after the apology. Trust is not rebuilt by reassurance alone.

Connection

When physical connection has disappeared

A sexless marriage is rarely only about sex. Physical distance can reflect what has already happened to emotional safety, presence, trust, and connection.

Relationship Reset

You May Be in the Right Place If...

  • You are both trying, but still having the same conversations.
  • Trust has been damaged by betrayal, secrecy, or repeated inconsistency.
  • You feel more connected through logistics than through the relationship itself.
  • Emotional or physical distance has become part of everyday life.
  • You are not sure whether to stay, leave, or rebuild differently.
Decision Clarity

What I Won't Decide for You

  • Whether you should stay.
  • Whether you should leave.
  • Who is right.
  • Whether reconciliation should be the goal.

My role is to help you see what is actually happening, what would need to change, and whether both of you are willing and capable of doing what the relationship would require.

Looking for Couples Therapy or Marriage Counseling in Westchester County?

If you are specifically looking for a licensed couples therapist or marriage counselor, therapy may be the right route.

If what brought you here is betrayal, repeated communication breakdowns, emotional disconnection, a sexless marriage, or uncertainty about whether the relationship can work, Relationship Reset offers a different kind of support when coaching is appropriate for your circumstances.

You do not have to determine the appropriate kind of care from a comparison table alone. The nature of the concerns, your individual needs, and the support already in place all matter.

In person or virtual: I work with individuals and couples in person from my Peekskill office in Westchester County, New York, and virtually with clients beyond the Hudson Valley.
Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What if we're looking for couples therapy or marriage counseling?

If you are specifically seeking licensed mental health treatment, a therapist is the appropriate provider.

My work is different. Relationship Reset focuses on the patterns between you, rebuilding trust, restoring connection, and creating clarity about what comes next. If therapy appears to be the better first step, I will tell you directly.

How does insurance work with relationship coaching?

Relationship coaching is private pay and is not billed through health insurance. I am not an in-network mental health provider.

How do we know whether we need therapy or coaching?

Start with what is actually happening rather than trying to choose a label first.

Significant mental health concerns, addiction, untreated trauma, or safety concerns may call for licensed clinical care.

If the central problem is repeated patterns around communication, betrayal, trust, emotional or physical disconnection, or uncertainty about the future of the relationship, we can look at whether Relationship Reset is appropriate.

Start With Clarity

If You Are Unsure What Kind of Help You Need

You do not need to decide everything before we talk.

The Foundation Session gives us time to look at what is actually happening, what you have already tried, and whether Relationship Reset is the appropriate support for what you are facing.
