The Foundation Session
Before we decide what comes next, we need to understand what is actually happening.
You have talked about it. Probably more than once. You may have tried changing how you communicate, giving each other space, reading, therapy, or simply trying harder. And yet something between you still is not making sense.
The Foundation Session gives us enough time to slow the situation down, understand what keeps happening, and get clearer about what actually needs your attention.
We start by understanding the relationship you are actually living now.
Couples often arrive knowing something is wrong but disagreeing about what the problem actually is. One person may believe the issue is communication. The other may believe it is trust. Someone may be focused on intimacy while their partner is still carrying resentment from something that happened months or years ago.
If we start trying to solve the wrong problem, you can work very hard and still end up in the same place.
Foundation gives us room to hear what each person is experiencing, look at what has already been tried, and identify the patterns underneath the conversations that keep repeating.
You do not need to have the relationship figured out before we meet.
Foundation is often where we begin when the situation sounds more like this.
This is not a consultation where you spend 90 minutes telling me the story and leave wondering what I think.
I will listen carefully, ask direct questions, slow down the places where meaning is getting lost, and tell you what I am noticing. We may look at communication, betrayal, trust, emotional or physical disconnection, recurring conflict, responsibility, or the decision you are trying to make.
The point is not to decide who is right. It is to understand what is happening between you well enough for us to see what requires attention.
We pay attention to what happens between you, not only what happened before you arrived.
Sometimes the most useful information appears while you are trying to explain the problem.
One person says something literally. The other hears what they believe it means. A question sounds like criticism. An explanation sounds like an excuse. Someone pushes harder to be understood while the other person becomes defensive or withdraws.
Those moments help us see the pattern rather than simply talk about it.
What is actually happening?
We separate the immediate conflict from the larger pattern so we are not trying to solve everything at once.
Where does the interaction change?
We pay attention to what was said, what was heard, what was inferred, and what each person does next.
What requires attention now?
We identify what would need to change and what kind of support, if any, makes sense from here.
The session follows what your relationship actually needs us to understand.
- Recurring conversations that keep ending in defensiveness, withdrawal, or frustration
- Betrayal, infidelity, secrecy, or a loss of trust
- Emotional disconnection or the feeling that you have become roommates
- A sexless marriage or loss of physical intimacy connected to disconnection, resentment, pressure, or emotional safety
- Boundaries, responsibility, and what rebuilding would actually require
- Uncertainty about whether to stay, leave, or reset the relationship
- What you have already tried and why you may still be ending up in the same place
You do not need to decide whether the relationship can work before we meet. We begin by understanding what would have to be true for that question to become clearer.
You will not be expected to remember everything we discussed.
A 90-minute conversation can hold a lot. Within 24 to 48 hours, you will receive a personalized written recap that organizes what we discussed, reinforces what became important during our time together, and gives us a clearer starting point for what comes next.
Foundation is often the beginning of understanding the relationship differently. We may meet again together with more information, spend time understanding each person's perspective individually, or continue working with something that surfaced during the first conversation.
What comes next is shaped by what we are learning together. The relationship tells us where the work needs to go.
The goal is not to leave with every problem resolved. It is to leave with a clearer understanding of what is happening and what comes next.
What happens next depends on what we learn.
There is no predetermined package you need to commit to before we understand your relationship.
For one couple, the next useful step may be another joint session soon. For another, individual conversations may give us a clearer understanding of what each person is carrying before we return to the relationship together. Someone coming alone may need time to apply what became clear before deciding what support would be useful next.
The cadence can change as the work changes. We may meet weekly for a period of time, then every other week, every three weeks, or monthly as the relationship becomes steadier and the work changes.
There is direction to the work, but not a script. We use enough structure to keep moving while continuing to respond to what the relationship is showing us.

“Working with Vanessa Cardenas provided the breakthrough our marriage actually needed. We spent 10 months with a traditional couples therapist who kept pushing superficial fixes like ‘date nights,’ which did nothing to resolve our actual issues.
During our foundation session, Vanessa pinpointed the deep, underlying problems we didn't even realize were there. She created a perfectly fair, balanced, and safe environment where both of us could be vulnerable and be heard. Her 90-minute session format allowed us to unpack complex emotions without feeling rushed.
Six weeks later, it was the relationship reset we were looking for.”
90 minutes, including intake review before we meet and personalized written follow-up afterward.
Clear expectations before we begin.
Sometimes the conversation needs more time.
I build flexibility into my schedule so we do not have to stop in the middle of something important simply because we have reached the scheduled end of the session.
When needed and available, a Foundation Session may continue for up to two additional hours. Additional time beyond the scheduled 90 minutes is billed at $200 per hour.

Questions before we meet
You should know what you are booking and what this first conversation is for.
What is the Foundation Session?
The Foundation Session is a 90-minute relationship coaching session for an individual or couple who needs a clearer understanding of what is happening in the relationship and what requires attention next. I review the information you provide beforehand, and you receive a personalized written recap after we meet.
Do both partners need to attend?
No. I work with both individuals and couples. Sometimes one person is ready to understand what is happening before the other is willing to participate. We begin with the person or people who are ready to have the conversation.
What if we do not know whether we should stay together?
You do not need to decide that before the session. We look at what is actually happening, what would need to change, whether those changes are realistic, and whether both people are willing and capable of participating. I do not make the decision for you. The goal is to help you see the relationship clearly enough to make a more conscious decision.
Is the Foundation Session therapy or marriage counseling?
No. Relationship Reset is coaching, not psychotherapy or marriage counseling. The work focuses on present relationship patterns, communication, trust, responsibility, connection, and decision clarity. Coaching can complement therapy, but it does not replace clinical mental health treatment when that level of care is needed.
Do you accept insurance?
No. Understanding Ear is a private-pay coaching practice. I do not bill insurance or submit coaching services for insurance reimbursement.
Where does the Foundation Session take place?
In-person sessions are held at my office in Peekskill, New York, serving individuals and couples throughout Westchester County and the Hudson Valley. Virtual sessions are also available for clients who prefer or need to meet remotely.
What happens after the Foundation Session?
Within 24 to 48 hours, you receive a personalized written recap that organizes what we discussed and the areas that became important during our time together. Foundation gives us a starting point. From there, we may meet again together, spend time understanding each partner's perspective individually, or continue working with what has already begun to surface. What comes next is shaped by what we are learning about the relationship, what needs attention, and what both of you are willing and capable of working on. There is direction to the work, but not a predetermined package or script.
What if 90 minutes is not enough?
When needed and available, a Foundation Session may continue for up to two additional hours. Additional time beyond the scheduled 90 minutes is billed at $200 per hour.
You do not need to arrive knowing how this ends.
Bring the relationship as it is now. We will begin by understanding what keeps happening, what has already been tried, and what would need our attention next.
