This Work Exists for People Who Are Done Guessing

They are both talking. Neither feels heard.

The same conversation keeps happening, sometimes with different words, but it ends in the same place. One person feels criticized. The other feels dismissed. Both are trying, and neither can understand why trying harder is not changing what happens between them.

Many of the individuals and couples who come to me have already read, reflected, compromised, explained, apologized, or tried counseling. They do not need another generic conversation about communicating better. They need enough structure to see what is actually happening while the relationship is happening.

That is the work of a Relationship Reset.

The goal is not to pressure people toward reconciliation or separation. It is to create enough clarity to ask better questions: Can this work? What would it take? Am I willing? Is my partner capable of meeting me there?

A Relationship Reset Is Not About Going Back

Going back to the relationship you had before the betrayal, disconnection, resentment, or repeated conflict is rarely the point.

The work is to understand what is happening now.

  • What was actually said, and what was inferred?
  • Where does a reasonable question turn into defensiveness?
  • Where are you expecting your partner to know something you have never clearly said?
  • Which behaviors are rebuilding trust, and which ones keep destabilizing it?
  • Is each person protecting the relationship while still protecting their own confidence and self-respect?

Intentional communication changes what becomes possible because people begin responding to what is actually happening instead of fighting the meaning they assigned to it.

A reset means seeing clearly, choosing consciously, and rebuilding differently.

Who This Work Serves Best

This work is designed for thoughtful, capable people who are functioning well in much of their lives while struggling privately in their relationship.

  • Couples stuck in the same conversations without resolution
  • Individuals and couples navigating betrayal, secrecy, or broken trust
  • Couples who feel emotionally or physically disconnected
  • Couples in sexless marriages where the physical distance reflects a deeper loss of safety, presence, or connection
  • People trying to decide whether their relationship can work and what rebuilding would actually require
  • Executives, entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders who value privacy, clarity, responsibility, and direct communication

This work is not crisis mental health care, psychotherapy, or emergency stabilization.

Background & Experience

Experience Built Through Study, Practice, and Thousands of Conversations

“I did not come to this work through a clinical healthcare career. I brought years of experience solving complex problems, leading teams, and navigating difficult conversations, then spent years studying, training, facilitating support groups, and working directly with individuals and couples. Over time, I turned both hard-won personal lessons and the experience of more than 5,000 individual, couple, and group sessions into practical guidance for couples struggling with trust, communication, and connection.”

Vanessa Cardenas, Founder of Understanding Ear

I am a Certified Betrayal Recovery Specialist, Relationship Reset Expert, and founder of Understanding Ear.

  • Education: BBA in Industrial Psychology from Baruch College, City University of New York
  • Professional training: Certified Coach Program through the Post Betrayal Transformation Institute, founded by Dr. Debi Silber, completed August 8, 2022; PBT Coach Certification Program completed January 24, 2024
  • Additional professional development: Nationally Certified Trauma Coach (NCTC) training through The Addictions Academy, completed in 2023, with additional professional development through Mindvalley and Dale Carnegie
  • Professional background: decades of corporate leadership and communication experience
  • Relationship practice: supporting individuals and couples since 2017

5,000+ individual, couple, and group sessions since 2017, supporting people navigating betrayal, broken trust, communication breakdowns, emotional disconnection, and relationship uncertainty.

I built Understanding Ear over years of evenings and weekends while maintaining a full-time corporate career. During that time, I studied, trained, facilitated support groups, and worked directly with individuals and couples. Several of those early years included pro bono work that allowed me to deepen my experience and refine the methods I now use in private practice.

I have also lived betrayal personally and rebuilt my own marriage deliberately. That experience informs how I understand the complexity of rebuilding trust, but it is not the centerpiece of the work. Every relationship has to be understood on its own terms.

A Boutique Practice by Design

Understanding Ear is intentionally personal.

I work directly with my clients rather than building a high-volume practice around standardized conversations. The relationship in front of me determines where we begin.

My work has included individual sessions, couple sessions, group support, virtual work, and in-person practice.

The practice operated virtually during the pandemic, later from an office in Garrison, New York, and is now based in Peekskill in Westchester County.

Scope, Responsibility, and Referrals

I am a Certified Betrayal Recovery Specialist and Relationship Reset Expert. I am not a licensed therapist and do not provide psychotherapy, diagnosis, or licensed mental health treatment.

Knowing the limits of my role is part of serving people responsibly. I maintain a network of licensed therapists and other qualified professionals so clients can be referred when their needs fall outside the scope of relationship coaching or would be better supported by complementary clinical care.

Sometimes the right next step is working with me. Sometimes it is therapy. Sometimes both forms of support can work alongside one another.

The goal is not to keep someone in my practice. The goal is to help them identify the support that makes sense for what is actually happening.

Recognized in Westchester County

Speaking

Conversations Beyond the Private Practice

I have been invited to speak at Columbia University, the University of Oxford, and Harvard University.

These were separate speaking engagements, each creating a different opportunity to bring conversations about relationships, communication, self-trust, and human connection beyond the private client room.

Why Clients Choose This Work

Most clients are not looking for another person to tell them who is right.

They want to understand why conversations keep collapsing, whether trust is actually being rebuilt, what each person is contributing to the pattern, and whether the relationship they are creating now is something they would consciously choose.

  • Difficult conversations become more intentional
  • Assumptions and interpretations are separated from what was actually said
  • Defensiveness becomes easier to recognize before it takes over
  • Trust is evaluated through behavior and consistency
  • Emotional and physical disconnection can be addressed as part of the relationship, not as an isolated symptom
  • Decisions are made with greater clarity and less reactivity

For some couples, this becomes a structured alternative to traditional marriage counseling. For others, it complements therapy or helps clarify what kind of support is needed next.

Relationship Reset in Westchester County and Beyond

Understanding Ear is based in Peekskill, New York, in Westchester County.

I work with individuals and couples in person and virtually, including clients throughout Westchester County, the Hudson Valley, New York City, across the United States, and internationally.

Geography matters less than fit. The people who tend to work well with me are already thinking deeply about their relationship and are ready to look honestly at what is happening.

If You're Considering Working Together

You do not need to know whether you are staying, leaving, or rebuilding before we talk.

The Foundation Session is where we slow the situation down, identify what is actually happening, and determine what would need to happen next for you to move forward with greater clarity.
